Bulletin 280 September 2022 Conducting Building Fire Drills
- Posted: October 03, 2024 17:19:13

Whether required for a new or existing building, an approved fire safety plan contains the emergency evacuation procedures which are so vital to allow occupants to safely exit in a timely manner, should a fire situation occur in the building. This section includes the methods for sounding the fire alarm system, notifying the local fire services, instructing the occupants to vacate their area, as well as special provisions for persons requiring assistance. Building management are responsible for ensuring that their supervisory staff and floor wardens are trained on their roles and responsibilities during an evacuation.

The training of the elected supervisory building personnel is crucial, as they are to guide the occupants to the nearest exit ways by which to safely reach the outside assembly area(s). They are to be familiar with the building fire alarm systems, whether programmed to act as a single-stage, modified 2-stage or a regular 2-stage system. The approved fire safety plan clearly describes the fire alarm system installed in the building, its sequence of operation, and the functions of the audible and visual devices. In most cases, the fire alarm is activated via a manual pull station when conducting fire drills, with the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the occupant evacuations in response to the fire alarm system audible and visual devices. Conducting a post-drill review is of benefit and will appraise if all evacuation procedures are precise. The fire drill outcomes are to be documented and, where concerns are identified, corrective measures are to be implemented. The approved fire safety plan contains samples of the fire drill signage to be posted, a drill preparation checklist, and an activity summary of the overall results. The fire drill records must be kept on site for at least twelve months, ready for review upon request by the Fire Services.
